The Center was established at the University of Missouri-Rolla (now Missouri University of Science and Technology) in May 1990 under an initial grant grant received from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

Since that time our list of sponsoring organizations has grown to include Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute (CFSEI) of the Steel Framing Alliance (SFA), Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA), Metal Construction Association (MCA), Rack Manufacturers Institute (RMI), Steel Deck Institute (SDI), and the Steel Stud Manufacturers Assocation (SSMA).

In addition to financial support, an appointed representative from each sponsoring organization provides advice and guidance to the Center as a member of its Steering Committee.
